AMED — The Newroz fire was lit at the Ben û Sen Bastion in the historic Sur district of Amed (Diyarbakır), as part of celebrations held ahead of this year’s Newroz.

The celebrations are being organized under the slogans “Newroza Azadî û Yekîtiya Demokratîk” (Newroz of Freedom and Democratic Unity) and “Freedom and Democracy Newroz.” In this context, women led the lighting of the Newroz fire at the Ben û Sen Bastion in the Sur district.

Many citizens, along with representatives of civil society organizations and political parties, attended the event. Participants gathered in front of the bastion and formed traditional Kurdish dances accompanied by music.

During the dances, participants chanted slogans including “Bijî Serok Apo (Long live Leader Apo)”. Artists from the Dicle Fırat Cultural Center performed with erbane drums and organized a march toward the city walls.

Women carrying torches climbed onto the bastions accompanied by the sound of the drums, creating colorful scenes along the historic walls.

Residents sang songs along with the rhythms of the erbane, while fireworks were set off during the celebration. Hundreds of participants dancing below the walls also chanted slogans such as “Bijî Serok Apo” and “Jin, Jiyan, Azadî (Woman, life, freedom)”.

The celebration continued with traditional dances around the Newroz fire lit in front of the bastions.

‘WE WILL WALK TOWARD FREEDOM’

Speaking at the event, Hatice Şahin from the Free Women's Movement (Tevgera Jinên Azad-TJA) congratulated everyone on Newroz, particularly Abdullah Öcalan. “Sûr is a place of resistance and struggle. It is the place where fighters strengthened their struggle. It is also the place of people like Zekiye Alkan who set their bodies on fire and strengthened the Newroz flame,” she said.

Hatice Şahin added that the struggle would continue until Öcalan’s physical freedom is secured. “We will not stop our struggle until the process initiated by Mr. Öcalan succeeds and his physical freedom is achieved. We will continue walking toward freedom until we succeed,” she said.

The Newroz celebration ended after the speeches.
