AMED – Ahmed Doğan from the Newroz Organizing Committee said that this year’s Newroz in Amed (Diyarbakır) will be a Newroz that ensures the freedom of Kurdish People’s Leader Abdullah Öcalan, adding that the first Newroz fire will be lit in Sur.

This year, Newroz in Amed will be celebrated under the slogans “Newroza Azadî û Yekîtiya Demokratîk” and “Freedom and Democracy Newroz.” The main celebration will take place on March 21 at Newroz Park, where Koma Agirê Jiyan, Alend Hazim, and kemençe performances will take the stage.

Before March 21, Newroz fires will also be lit in districts and neighborhoods across the city. Democratic Regions Party (DBP) Amed Co-chair and member of the Newroz Organizing Committee, Ahmed Doğan, stated that the first Newroz fire in Amed will be lit tomorrow (Wednesday) in the historic district of Sur.

Doğan said that people will light Newroz fires in all 17 districts of Amed and in many neighborhoods, adding that a 15-member Newroz committee has been formed and has already begun its work.

He stated that this year’s Newroz will be the one that ensures the freedom of Abdullah Öcalan and continued: “Just as in Rojava, Mr. Öcalan’s paradigm has led the resistance in Rojhilat as well. The state of war emerging in the Middle East has shown how important this paradigm is for all peoples. All peoples should gather around Mr. Öcalan and his paradigm and defend it more strongly.”

Doğan added that the Kurdish people will flood the Newroz grounds on March 21. “On March 11 we will light the Newroz fire in Sur in Amed. The city walls of Sur have historical importance for us. We will light our first fire in the Sur walls, which have a history of resistance,” he said.
