MÊRDÎN - Mizgin Acar, a prisoner who allegedly attempted to suicide in Mardin Type E Closed Prison, died in the hospital where she was being treated.
Mizgin Acar, a prisoner who allegedly “attempted to suicide” in Mardin Type E Closed Prison on the night of October 1, died in the intensive care unit of Mardin Training and Research Hospital where she was being treated. Acar's body was taken to the morgue this morning. It is learned that Acar's body will be buried by her relatives in Mîdyad (Midyat) district.

Acar, who was put on trial in 2017 based on the statements of a confessor for allegedly “being in the neighborhoods where clashes took place” during the curfews imposed in Mêrdîn's Nisêbîn (Nusaybin) district between 2015 and 2016, was acquitted after the trial. After the Court of Cassation overturned the verdict, Acar was detained and arrested on May 30, 2024 by police officers who went to her house in Mîdyad.
Acar was placed in Elazığ High Security Closed Prison and was transferred to Mardin Type E Closed Prison on September 9 for a hearing. On September 9, the prosecutor's office issued a final opinion against Acar with the demand of “aggravated life imprisonment”. The court gave time for the defense and adjourned the next hearing to September 30. Acar, who was held in Mardin Type E Closed Prison due to the proximity of the trial date, was sentenced to “aggravated life imprisonment” at the hearing held on September 30. After the verdict, Acar was taken back to prison and her family was informed about her alleged “suicide attempt” at night.
Her family was informed that Acar, who was being treated in the intensive care unit of Mardin Training and Research Hospital, had died.
