İSTANBUL - Fince Akman, one of those who were beaten and detained during the "freedom" rally in Istanbul, has filed a criminal complaint against the police officers through his lawyers and demanded a public prosecution.

Istanbul was one of the cities prevented from participating in the "Freedom" rally held in Amed (Diyarbakır) on 13 October to demand the lifting of the isolation of PKK Leader Abdullah Öcalan, his physical freedom and a democratic solution to the Kurdish issue. The statement organised by the Peoples' Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party) in Kadıköy was also prevented and 30 people were beaten and detained by the police.

It is stated that some of the detainees were subjected to "harassment", "ill-treatment" and "violence". 30 people who were charged with "Violating Law No 2911 on Meetings and Demonstrations", "Making Propaganda for a terrorist organization" and "Praising Crime and Criminal" were released after statement procedures at Istanbul Security Directorate.

CRIMINAL COMPLAINT ON POLICE VIOLENCE

Later, photographs of 57-year-old Fince Akman, one of the relatives of prisoners, who was beaten during detention, emerged. In our news article titled "Violence and harassment in detention: They cannot break our will", Fince Akman applied to Istanbul Anatolian Chief Public Prosecutor's Office through her lawyers and filed a criminal complaint against the police officers. In the application, the police officers on duty on the day of the incident were identified and an investigation was initiated against them on the charges of "intentional injury", "torture", "abuse of office", "insult" and "failure to report a crime by a public official".

It is stated in the application that Fince Akman participated in the statement within the framework of the right to "meeting and demonstration march", and that the police intervened without justification and then prevented them from dispersing and intervened "disproportionately". The application emphasised that Fince Akman was handcuffed behind her back and kept in a detention vehicle for a long time, and stated that the crime of torture was committed. In the application, it was stated that Fince Akman had visible traces of violence and a public prosecution was demanded.
