COLEMÊRG - Ahmet Kaya, a prisoner whose ribs and teeth were broken in a guard attack, is in a deteriorating condition due to the lack of treatment after the attack, and his jaw bones have started to melt.

Ahmet Kaya, who was arrested in Colemêrg (Hakkari) in 2014 on charges of "unauthorised possession and exchange of dangerous substances" and "being an illegal organization member" and sentenced to 15 years in prison, had his ribs and teeth broken by a group of 15 guards during a ward raid in Van High Security Prison in January 2023. Kaya, who had been imprisoned for 11 years, was transferred to Erzurum Dumlu High Security Prison No 1 after the attack. Kaya's sister Kevser Kaya said that her brother could not recover from the torture he was subjected to 2 years ago.

Kevser Kaya stated that no action has been initiated so far regarding the attack on her brother and said that instead of an investigation, her brother was "exiled" and added, "For the last 2 years after the torture, my brother has been suffering from shortness of breath, gum problems, osteoporosis and stomach disorders. 2 years ago, due to the violence he was subjected to, doctors told him that he needed surgery for his broken ribs. 250 thousand TL money was requested for the operation. Since our financial means did not allow us to pay for his treatment, we could not make the necessary payment for his treatment and he could not be treated."

'HE CANNOT BREATHE'

Kevser Kaya stated that her brother's health condition is getting worse day by day due to the prevention of his right to health, especially financial impossibilities, and said, "He has difficulty breathing due to damage to his ribs and uses spray-type medications to breathe. In the same torture, her teeth were also broken and she could not get dental treatment due to economic problems. Therefore, the bones in the tooth have also melted and cannot be treated."

'HEAR OUR VOICE'

Stating that all political prisoners are subjected to pressure and ill-treatment in prisons, Kevser Kaya said, "Everyone should take action as soon as possible to end the torture and rights violations against prisoners. It is not enough that they are punished for no reason at all, torture is unacceptable. If prison sentences are given, then they should stop physical and psychological violence. Everyone should hear our voice. We expect everyone to support us for the treatment of my brother."

Kaya also informed his family that in his weekly phone call on 22 January, he requested a delegation to come to the prison to discuss the problems he was experiencing in prison.
