ANKARA - 308 intellectuals consisting of academics, journalists, writers and actors called on the opposition to stand up against Turkey’s occupation operations against North and East Syria.

In a written statement, 308 intellectuals asked the Turkish opposition "not to be a party to this crime", calling attention to the invasion attacks in southern Kurdistan (northern Iraq).

“It is claimed that a Turkish military operation against North and East Syria /Rojava is only a matter of time. There is no justification for this operation/war. The claim that ‘the enemy threatens our country from Syria’ is just an excuse fabricated by the ruling AKP-MHP coalition. There are only people over there, who are struggling to defend their occupied lands, peoples, assets and order and suffering great pain and destruction,” the statement said.

'GOVERNMENT WAGES A WAR FOR ITS OWN INTEREST'

“No one has any interest in this war except the government partners. Apart from our children who are martyred not for the sake of the country but for that of the government, and our young people who are forced to fight, die and kill in foreign lands, all of the people of Turkey will suffer from this war. Huge expenditures on war and weaponry worsen the economic conditions of 84 million people in our country, where citizens struggle to survive amid great difficulties. Moreover, war expenditures take our future hostage and dash hopes. Our children die and their future is hijacked.

'RAISE YOUR VOICE'

We have not heard a strong voice or a 'NO' from the opposition until today. If you do not raise your voice against the belligerent government, you will be a partner in the crimes against humanity as well as our country and our people. Do not be a party to any crime of this government, especially to war. Maybe you are afraid of being accused as a traitor, terrorist, PKK supporter, etc. or maybe you are afraid of losing votes. We request you to abandon your silence which only gives countenance to the Erdogan-Bahceli alliance and we also expect you to show the courage to say NO to the war in Syria and Iraq loudly, openly and clearly,” the statement said.
